Denise Gough wins Best Actress Olivier

Denise Gough has been crowned 2016’s Best Actress at the Olivier Awards with MasterCard for her staggering turn in People, Places And Things.

Her role as addict Emma in Duncan Macmillan’s powerful rehab-set drama saw her triumph in one of the most hotly contested categories of the evening over fellow performers Nicole Kidman, Gemma Arterton, Janet McTeer and Lia Williams.

Gough originated the role of a woman facing her demons in Jeremy Herrin’s vivid production at the National Theatre in 2015. She can currently be seen in the role at the Wyndham’s Theatre following its West End transfer.

For both runs the actor has been hailed as giving an impeccable and stirring performance, with Official London Theatre calling her “simply astounding” and the Guardian saying: “She breathtakingly captures Emma’s mix of dependency, delusion and scepticism: she never judges the character but plays her from her own point of view as a woman whose vulnerability is matched by a lone-wolf obduracy. It is an astonishing performance.”

Gough adds this Olivier Award win to the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award she received earlier this year.

People, Places And Things is currently playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre until 18 June. You can book tickets through us here.
