Jerusalem, Spring Awakening, Burnt By The Sun and Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical have triumphed in the creative categories at this year’s Laurence Olivier Awards.

In the first award of the night, presented by Billy Elliot’s Ann Emery, Mark Henderson picked up Best Lighting Design for the National Theatre’s production of Peter Flannery’s Burnt By The Sun, which played in the Lyttelton theatre last spring.

Brian Ronan was awarded Best Sound Design for his work on rock musical Spring Awakening, which ran at the Novello theatre early last year. The show, which transferred into the West End from the Lyric Hammersmith, has received seven nominations.

Jerusalem may have failed to convert its Best Sound Design nomination, but its designer Ultz triumphed in the Best Set Design category, taking home the coveted bronze statuette for his leafy design of a Wiltshire wood.

Fashion designer Jasper Conran was on stage to present Best Costume Design, which went to Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner for their flamboyant designs for camp comedy musical Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical at the Palace theatre.

Members of the cast of Priscilla celebrated their win with a live performance following the presentation of the first four awards.
