John Dagleish will be celebrating All Day And All Of The Night for a long time to come after being awarded the title of Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sunny Afternoon at the Olivier Awards 2015 with MasterCard.
The actor’s portrayal of Ray Davies in the British-born musical resulted in Dagleish’s West End debut after the show transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre following its initial success at the Hampstead Theatre.
Dagleish, whose co-star George Maguire took home the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical, spoke to us backstage at the ceremony: “I’m completely overwhelmed, this is amazing. For George to win as well is amazing. He’s my surrogate brother and I love him dearly. These are going to go next to each other in our dressing room.”
Dagleish triumphed in a category of well-respected musical theatre actors including Killian Donnelly (Memphis The Musical), Jon Jon Briones (Miss Saigon) and Brandon Victor Dixon (The Scottsboro Boys).
His performance, which saw him capture all the talent and personality of The Kinks’ frontman, has garnered rapturous critical and public acclaim, being described as “phenomenal” by the Evening Standard’s Fiona Mountford and “perfect” by The Telegraph’s Dominic Cavendish.
Dagleish is continuing to win over West End audiences with his renditions of the rock band’s back catalogue of hits at the Harold Pinter Theatre, where the touching and tuneful show transferred in autumn 2014.
Featuring songs including A Long Way From Home, You Really Got Me, A Well Respected Man, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, Sunny Afternoon is currently booking until 24 October, by which time it will have an enjoyed more than a year in the West End.
