Broadway import Legally Blonde The Musical has picked up this year’s Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

The show, which made its West End debut in early 2010 after success in New York, triumphed over Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, boutique musical Love Story and fellow Broadway import Fela!

Legally Blonde The Musical, which received five nominations this year, is based on the hit 2001 Reese Witherspoon film and tells the story of sorority girl and high school prom queen Elle Woods, who, after being dumped by her boyfriend for someone more serious, hits the books and heads for Harvard Law.

The Legally Blonde team picked up the award from international superstar Barry Manilow, who gave an exclusive performance earlier in the ceremony.
