Matt Henry wins Olivier Award

Matt Henry has been awarded an Olivier Award for his critically acclaimed performance as Lola in Kinky Boots.

The actor, who was named 2016’s Best Actor in a Musical, triumphed over Guys And Doll’s David Haig and Jamie Parker, Mrs Henderson Presents’ Ian Bartholomew and fellow Kinky Boots’ star Killian Donnelly.

His turn in Harvey Fierstein’s big-hearted musical has won him a legion of fans both from the critics and the public alike, winning over audiences as the sassy, witty and wise drag queen Lola who saves a family business from closure with her need for sturdy stilettos.

Originating the role in the Tony Award-winning production when it made its West End premiere last September, The Guardian’s Michael Billington praised Henry’s pivotal role in the show’s success, saying: “The show is ultimately powered by Matt Henry as Lola… Henry is both muscular and at ease in mascara. He makes you feel Lola takes pride in his profession, dismissing recreational transvestites as people “who look like Winston Churchill in their mum’s knickers”… Henry also sings up a storm.”

The former The Voice star can still be seen in the role as Kinky Boots continues its run at the Adelphi Theatre where it is currently booking to 24 September. You can book tickets through us here.
