Showstopping Cities: Our favourite theatres in Edinburgh

Published 29 March 2021

As theatre fans, visiting our favourite venues and exploring new theatres is all part of the fun. With theatres across the country announcing reopening’s, we can’t wait to embrace the unique power of theatre once again. Packed with plenty of theatres, Edinburgh is one of the first cities theatre-goers should visit when venues reopen.

As the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh is one of the most culturally distinctive cities in the whole of the UK and wears its cultural heritage with pride. The Old Town has a multitude of dazzling theatres that showcase Edinburgh’s thriving culture. Located slap bang in the middle of Edinburgh’s centre, the Traverse Theatre has been described as the ‘beating heart of the Fringe’. The theatre was founded in 1963 and played a part in leading Edinburgh Festival’s dramatic growth throughout the late 20th century. Traverse are committed to giving opportunities to precocious playwrights, directors and actors, with a focus on alternative worldviews.

The Edinburgh Playhouse

The Edinburgh Playhouse is the jewel that Edinburgh wears in its theatrical crown. A recent performance of The Crucible, starring Nicholas Shoesmith and Constance Devernay blew audiences away with its ‘white-hot intensity’. The Playhouse is the perfect stage for momentous and life-changing theatre. Opening its doors to the public in 1929, the theatre was named as a Category A building by Historic Scotland in 2008 due to its stunning architecture and historical importance. Theatre enthusiasts who love their stages soaked in tradition will adore this truly unique venue.

From the Old Town to the New Town, Edinburgh contrasts its wonderful heritage with a variety of groundbreaking and boundary pushing modern stages. The Festival Theatre is one example of this contemporary charm, producing productions that challenge societal norms and stand face to face with 21st century issues. The glass architecture only adds to the contemporary feel and supplies your theatre trip with a unique sense of grandeur. If you’re looking for something a little more intimate, the Studio sits alongside the Festival Theatre and offers a wide variety of smaller productions.

If you’re as excited as we are about getting back to the wonderful world of theatre, we’re sure you’ll adore the wonderful venues that Edinburgh has to offer. Make sure to book your tickets as soon as possible and give your support to Scottish theatres!
