Spooky shows to get you in the mood for Halloween

With just over a fortnight to go until Halloween, it’s time to dust off the cobwebs, shine your witch’s hat and get into the spooky spirit.

If you’re in the mood for thrills, chills and scares this October (or in the coming months), then look no further. Below are some of the spookiest shows currently touring the UK that you can spend your Theatre Tokens on – click on the titles to to find out more about each show and see if it’s coming to a theatre near you.

The Woman In Black

Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s best-selling novel tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they delve further into his darkest memories the borders between make-believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep. After over 33 years and 13,000 performances in the West End, The Woman In Black is heading out on tour.

 

2:22 A Ghost Story

The smash-hit, supernatural thriller 2:22 – A Ghost Story is an adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear. What do you believe? And do you dare discover the truth? Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again? Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up… until 2:22… and then they’ll know.

 

Frankenstein

1943. Whilst Europe tears itself apart, two women hide from their past at what feels like the very end of the world. And one of them has a terrifying story to tell… This new thriller – inspired by the classic gothic novel and complete with a stunning original score – explores the very fabric of what makes us human and the ultimate cost of chasing “perfection”. Frankenstein is an electrifying reimagining of the world’s favourite horror story that will set minds and spines tingling.

 

Edward Scissorhands

Matthew Bourne’s magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands is based on the classic Tim Burton movie. Featuring the hauntingly beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and his company, New Adventures return to this witty, bittersweet story of an incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world.

 

The Enfield Haunting

Based on the first-hand accounts of one of the ghost hunters, The Enfield Haunting is the true story of what happened when a dedicated single mother, tries to protect her three children from something that is incomprehensible, deeply disturbing and is hurtling to a terrifying conclusion. Catherine Tate and David Threlfall star in the world premiere of this major new play by Paul Unwin (co-creator of Casualty).

 

The Bat With No Bite – Northern Stage

28 October – 4 November. Suitable for age 7 and under.

In a cobweb covered attic, above a dark and dusty house, a series of spooky surprises unfolds and the coffin lid is lifted on a secret that is best kept out of the sunlight… because you can count on vampires to keep their mouths shut… or can you?
