Sadler’s Wells has been located in Islington, near Angel, since 1683. The site has two theatres: Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Lilian Baylis Studio. Sadler’s Wells is renowned as one of the world’s leading dance venues. As well as a stage for visiting companies, the theatre is also a producing house with a number of associated artists and companies that produce original works for the theatre.

The Theatre is owned by the Sadler’s Wells Trust, but the venue as a whole possesses a history which extends long beyond the construction of the present Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

The Theatre as we currently know it was built in 1998, replacing the previous space, which was constructed in 1765. Built with the assistance of a large grant of funding from the National Lottery, it has a capacity of 1,500, which is distributed over the theatre’s three levels. In addition to this, the venue is home to the Lilian Baylis Studio, which can seat 180 audience members.
