Sustainability
We recognise our responsibility to lead our industry by taking bold decisions with the aim to reduce our carbon footprint. Our aim for the Olivier Awards 2022 is to create an outstanding ceremony while being as sustainable as possible.
Here are the actions we have taken towards making the event net zero carbon.
Green Carpet
- We believe we are the first major awards ceremony not to use carpet for our ‘red carpet’ as it is non-recyclable and ends up in landfill. Instead, Wow Grass have supplied us with a new environmentally friendly green carpet (of grass grown in a bed of felt) which will be re-grown and re-used.
- Our souvenir brochure is fully recyclable and qualifies to be Carbon Balanced by the World Land Trust and uses vegetable inks.
- We have switched to digital invitations and tickets.
- We are no longer printing ticket wallets or party passes.
- Mastercard have pledged to plant one tree for every ticket purchased by the public.
Ceremony and production
- We have encouraged guests to re-wear outfits, wear sustainable brands, or hire their clothing, including through our clothing partner, Hurr.
- Our set, designed by Peter Bingemann is being re-used.
- All electricity used at the Royal Albert Hall is provided by a renewable energy supplier.
- Brewsters Waste Management will recycle all waste in the skips post awards.
- Instead of purchasing flowers as gifts, trees will be planted.
- No goody bags have been produced.
- Contracts and paperwork have been available digitally.
- Elimination of as much single use materials as possible, including the use of technology on the green carpet and media areas.
Catering
- All drinks served or purchased at the Royal Albert Hall will be in glass or compostable corn-starch cups.
- In our catered Grand Tier and Loggia boxes, we have sustainable menu choices.
- For crew catering we are working with Eat to the Beat, with increased vegan/vegetarian options, and no disposable plastic used.
- No plastic bottles will be used, and all casts and crew involved in the making of the awards will be given a commemorative sustainable water bottle.
Transport
- We have encouraged all guests, staff, suppliers and contractors to use public transport where possible.
- Our car partner, Audi, will be supplying a fleet of cars, the majority of which will be fully electric or hybrid cars.
